3 tips for communicating during a divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 20, 2025 | Divorce |

Anyone who’s going through a divorce knows that the entire process can be stressful. Part of this is because you have to discuss the applicable matters. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that you can usually get away from because there are decisions to make about the divorce.

There are certain ways that you may be able to keep the communication calm and productive during the divorce. These three tips are a good starting point to keeping control of the communication.

1. Focus solely on divorce-related matters

The matters related to the divorce are all you need to focus on when you’re speaking to your ex. In almost all cases, the reason for the divorce won’t matter much once the decision to end the marriage is made.

2. Know your non-negotiables

During the divorce negotiations, you’ll have to make decision about what you need to stand firm on and what you can give up. Think about every decision that you’ll have to make during the process and decide if there are any non-negotiable points. For example, you may have a non-negotiable that your children must attend a specific school, even if you have to pay for it. Knowing those non-negotiables ahead of time can make them easier to stick to.

3. Keep the end in mind

Ultimately, the goal of the divorce is to end the marriage on the best footing possible. This may not end up exactly how you want, but keeping the legal finalization of the divorce in mind may help to give you the motivation you need to keep communication on track so the process can continue to move forward.
